Fifth Generation Services HUB for European Union Governmental Satellite Communications
This project aims to evolve the flagship European initiative EU- GOVSATCOM to improve the flexibility of satellite network operators in allocating their resources to the needs of GOVSATCOM UEs
5G-HUB Stakeholder Event:
5G and Satellite for Humanitarian Response and Emergency Services
Date: May 14, 2026
Location: Bresso (Milan), Italy
We are pleased to announce an upcoming stakeholder event dedicated to the role of the 5G-HUB project in the European GOVSATCOM landscape. The event aims to raise awareness about the importance of EU investment in this sector and explore how 5G via satellite can help humanitarian response and emergency services. During the event, representatives from the EU/EUSPA, NGOs, satellite operators, and academia will also discuss the challenges of 5G and Satellite integration in the 5G-HUB project and why it matters in such crucial scenarios.
The event’s agenda is designed to bridge the gap between communication technologies and real-world operational needs.
This event will feature invited speakers for the following sessions:
- Session on Mission-Critical Services: defining operational requirements for Search and Rescue NGOs, addressing current coordination difficulties due to lack of broadband in open waters.
- Session in System Integration and Service Continuity: exploring how to integrate Terrestrial and Non-Terrestrial Networks (TN and NTNs) for service continuity from coastal areas to the open sea and in emergency scenarios (i.e. earthquakes).
- Panel session: a round table discussion on how humanitarian organizations can benefit from 5G-HUB and how current challenges can be addressed from operators.
- Exhibition part by ONE – Mobitrust and earthquake mission critical services (*)
(*) On-the-Field Experience: beyond the presentations, participants will have the opportunity to visit the Croce Rossa Italiana’s rabble field in Bresso for a hands-on experience.
Registration: to be opened
Detailed Program: to be provided

5G-HUB: Fifth Generation Services HUB for European Union Governmental Satellite Communications
Satellite communication networks in Europe have been in the market for more than 40 years with consolidated capacity to connect remote areas and represent an essential tool for state members. Therefore, it is evident that there is a need to allow the satellite operators to manage connectivity demands efficiently with the overall available resources.
This project aims to evolve the flagship European initiative EU- GOVSATCOM to improve the flexibility of satellite network operators in allocating their resources to the needs of GOVSATCOM UEs.
This goal will require the development of a new network management interface between the GOVSATCOM-HUB (G-HUB) and the underlying infrastructure offered by resource providers in which 5G core network entities and microservice-based services are deployed.
This proposal coined ‘Fifth Generation Services HUB for European Union Governmental Satellite Communications’ (5G-HUB) project will address the interoperability issues, allowing the GOVSATCOM terminals to connect to different space assets, eventually including terrestrial systems.
Project aim
Validate the G-HUB functions over a 5G NTN solution in three trials with the initial development of an interoperable 5G NTN terminal in Ku and X bands.
Trials to verify the system performance
The trials will aim to verify the system performance in terms of resource allocation, quality of service provision, and capacity to switch communication (traffic steering) from the satellite network to the terrestrial network in a way that is unnoticeable to the user.
Trials based on critical scenarios
These trials will be based on critical scenarios of emergency management where there is the need to coordinate teams in remote areas and the maritime area. The interoperability of different satellite operators will also be investigated in this context.
